Operation of a Hall Effect Sensor

A basic Hall effect sensor detects the presence of a magnetic field. Here are some explanatory diagrams according to the 3 different Hall effect sensor families (Unipolar, Bipolar, Latching):

As such, these sensors can be used in many applications for contactless presence detection or pulse counting to determine the rotational speed of an object.

These sensors are used in many automotive applications (motor speed, neutral detection, camshaft position), but also in casual consumer applications (coffee machine, clamshell smartphone detection, water meter detection).

Basic Hall effect sensors provide the same functionality as REED sensors but offer a longer lifetime.
In fact, the contacts of a REED sensor can wear out after several tens of millions of opening / closing cycles.
This can cause bounce or loss of conductivity, which is not the case for Hall effect sensors.

Hall effect sensors can also be used to measure the actual variation of a magnetic field. However, this requires additional electronics and calibration. They can therefore be used in Teslameters.

Advantages of Hall effect sensors

  • Cost less than a mechanical switch for better reliability over time
  • Operate up to 100 kHz
  • No mechanical rebound
  • Not sensitive to disturbances
